As a stand-alone expansion pack, Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome was released on October 31, 1998. It was developed by Ensemble Studios (a subsidiary of Microsoft Game Studios) and published by Microsoft. The game includes four civilizations, and adds four new units and four new heroes to the game, as well as three new, single-player campaigns. It also expands the game's map size (the geography of the world), adds an online multiplayer mode, and adds three new cities, a brand new campaign, and a new map editor. The Gold Edition added a second CD with a flight simulation game.
The first version of the game was released in 1998. It was a Windows-only game, and lacked an online multiplayer mode. In August 1999, it was released on a CD-ROM, adding Definitive Edition to the Age of Empires family.
In the first few stages of the game, some of the new units' mechanics are limited. The Vandals' Vandals can't use their quick attack feature until they reach the mid-game, and the Vandals' melee attack can't be used until level 2.
The game features a new unit called the Phalanx. This unit replaces the Pikeman, and replaces the Vanguard in later campaigns. They are better at attacking the enemy from the front, and can attack more quickly than the Pikemen, but they cannot attack buildings, and they cannot attack enemy phalanx units. They are also much weaker than the Pikeman in the early stages of the game.
The expansion is available to purchase for a discounted price online, where it can also be purchased together with the original Age of Empires in the Collectors Edition. The Definitive Edition of the game removes all extras from the pack, and costs less than $10.
In addition to the missions the expansion offers a new single-player campaign, where the main goal is to build a Roman Empire with the Roman civilization. In single-player mode, the player can also choose to play as one of the 4 new civilizations.
