Yo La Tengo has released two albums of entirely instrumental music, four albums with a broader sound, and one album of cover songs. All of the albums have been produced by Ivo Perelman, except that the band's 1997 album, Kissing to Be Clever, was produced by Bob Weston. The band's 1998 album, Public Domain, was a collaborative effort with the musical group Tortoise, under the title The Valley Is One Study. The album was produced by Perelman and Weston, but it was credited solely to Yo La Tengo.

Yo La Tengo has been one of the most consistent and prolific independent artists since its founding in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1984. The band has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Village Voice newspaper in 2005.
Yo La Tengo was formed by three friends: Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew. The three met as students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Hubley, McNew, and Kaplan had met as students at Wesleyan, but they were not roommates. Hubley had been in a band called Sister George, but she had transferred to Wesleyan without her bandmates. At Wesleyan, Kaplan met Hubley, who played the accordion. Kaplan was also acquainted with McNew, who was in a band called Underside of Power. Kaplan, Hubley, and McNew started writing, performing, and recording music on their own. They called themselves LPs, and they decided to make their own records on an 8-track tape recorder.
